Bitcoin Gamma Exposure

SYNC & TRADE · 2026-10-08 · GEX levels: the basics

Ever watched bitcoin stall at a price where your chart shows nothing at all? No volume shelf, no old high, just a round number. Bitcoin gamma exposure is often the reason. It maps where options dealers have to buy or sell to stay hedged, and those prices behave like levels even though they never appear on a candle chart.

What bitcoin gamma exposure measures

A dealer who sells options does not want a directional bet, so he hedges with bitcoin itself. Gamma tells him how fast that hedge has to change as price moves. Sum that up strike by strike and you get gamma exposure, or GEX. A strike with large gamma is a crowded spot: when price gets close, hedging flows pick up right there.

One strike, one night, five times stronger

On October 5, 2026, the 87,000 strike grew about five times on our map in a single night. Open interest barely moved, up only 9%.

Two things lined up. Price climbed toward the strike, and those options were hours from expiry. A strike's strength depends on three inputs: how many contracts, how close price is, and how much time is left. Contracts stayed flat while distance and time both tightened. At 01:20 UTC bitcoin printed 86,999, one dollar short of the strike, then traded just under it for three hours. When price slipped away, the level faded with it.

Distance is measured in moves, not dollars

A thousand dollars means something different on a quiet day than on a wild one. We measure distance in expected moves, how far price typically travels before expiry. Within half a move a strike is strong, around one move it is moderate, and beyond two moves it is dormant.

Our own archive agrees: whether price reaches a strike depends on distance in moves, not on how big the strike is.

Why expiry changes everything

Deribit settles bitcoin options every day at 08:00 UTC, with bigger series on Fridays and month-end. As expiry approaches, the gamma curve gets taller and narrower. The same contracts near price weigh many times more, while those a little further away go quiet. That is why single-day levels appear fast and vanish just as fast.

What GEX does not tell you

It does not predict direction. It shows where contracts sit and how crowded a price will be if the market gets there. Treat it as market conditions, not a signal.

FAQ

What is bitcoin gamma exposure? An estimate of how much options dealers must buy or sell bitcoin at each price to stay hedged.

Why can a level grow without new contracts? Price moves closer and expiry gets nearer, so the same contracts carry more gamma.
