What Is GEX? Gamma Exposure and Dealer Hedging in Crypto
"GEX" is one of those three letters traders type in chats as if everyone knew them. Here is what it means without the textbook. When you buy an option, someone sells it to you, and that someone usually does not want to bet on price. So they hedge by trading the underlying asset, and the amount they have to trade grows and shrinks as price moves. GEX, gamma exposure, is an estimate of how much hedging that adds up to.
The mechanics in three steps
Delta is how much of the underlying a seller of an option must hold to stay neutral. Sell a call that moves about half as much as bitcoin, and you hold half a bitcoin as a hedge.
Gamma is how fast that delta changes when price moves. High gamma means the hedge has to be redone often and in bigger pieces.
GEX adds this up over all strikes. It is quoted in dollars of the underlying a dealer must buy or sell per 1% move in price.
Two regimes follow from the sign, in theory. When dealers are net long gamma, they sell into rallies and buy dips, so their hedging leans against the move and price may stall near big strikes. When they are net short gamma, they buy rising price and sell falling price, so their hedging pushes along the move and moves may stretch. The price where the total flips sign is often drawn as the regime border, or gamma flip. Whether this shows up in Bitcoin's real moves we can't yet say: our own check on 15 days of data is too short to confirm it either way.
What it looks like on Bitcoin right now
On October 10, 2026, with BTC at 82,785, here is gamma by strike across all expiries:

The biggest single strike is 80,000, with about 70 million dollars of gamma per 1% move. It is below the price, so we label it support. Right next to the price, 83,000 carries about 66 million, mostly in series that expire within days. The biggest call-heavy strike above is 90,000, about 60 million, and the map labels it the wall. The regime border sits at 81,531, a bit under the current price: if the usual assumption holds, hedging here leans against moves rather than along with them.
Notice something. The largest piles of open contracts are far above price, at 95,000 and 100,000. The 100,000 strike is off this chart, and 95,000 reaches only half the height of 80,000, because gamma falls off quickly with distance. Contracts alone say little; distance and time to expiry decide how much they weigh. Close to expiry the same strike can weigh several times more. That is why the map changes during the day without a single new trade. For the long version of that story, see Bitcoin Gamma Exposure.
What we have checked on our own data
We test claims instead of repeating them. Two results matter here. First, whether price touches a big strike before expiry is mostly decided by how far away it is, measured in ordinary moves of the price: within half a move price touches a strike about 85 to 90% of the time, at one to two moves about 20%. On our 11 days of archive, the size of the strike added nothing beyond that distance. That is a short window, so we will repeat the test in November. Second, the idea that price is pulled to the "magnet" strike before expiry held in two of six expiries we checked. That is too few to say anything either way.
What GEX cannot do
- It does not predict direction. It describes how big a hedge is, not which way price goes.
- It rests on an assumption. Public data shows contracts, not who is long or short. Every provider guesses, so numbers differ between sources. Glassnode has written about this problem for crypto and proposes a different method based on trade flow.
- It does not beat a big news event. A forced seller in the market can overwhelm any regime.
We treat GEX as a map of where moves may be easier or harder, not as a signal.
Quick answers
What does GEX stand for?
Gamma exposure: the dollar amount of the asset dealers must trade per 1% price move because of the options they hold.
Is positive GEX bullish?
No. In theory positive GEX damps moves in both directions; it is about the size of moves, not direction.
What is the gamma flip level?
The price where total dealer gamma changes sign, separating the damping regime from the amplifying one.
Where can I see Bitcoin GEX live?
On the levels map. If you want to learn to read it, the course goes from the first strike to the full map.
